Has anyone ever driven Dalton Highway? What's it like.
Keep in mind that the original name for the Dalton Highway (and the name many Alaskans still use) was "The Haul Road"! And that the word "highway" is used rather loosely in Alaska and NW Canada. The Dalton "Highway", the Denali "Highway", the Edgerton-McCarthy-Kennicott "Highway", the Top-of-the-World "Highway", the Dempster "Highway", the Campbell "Highway", etc., are not highways by Lower 48 standards by any stretch of the imagination. They are sometimes gravel, sometimes packed dirt, sometimes "used to be paved" roads that might be a dashed line on the map in most parts of the U.S. However, because they are the only road route to their destinations, these roads carry an amazing amount of traffic, much of it heavy trucks.
So, if you want to keep your RV pristine, avoid those "highways." If you want an adventure, take them. Just know that you may have to drive very slowly to minimize damage. So don't plan on going the entire distance in just a day or two like you might be able to do on similar-length highways in the Lower 48.
And have a great time!
