There is a very nice / rustic lodge, the Alpine Creek Lodge, about halfway on Denali Hwy. They rent some rooms and offer meals. They also have a camping area and when I was there in 2012 it was $20.00. Either camping or renting the room, you could use the living area of the camp, they have internet, big screen TV, a big round 45 gallon wood stove. After supper, we had a few beer with the owner and other customers around the big dinning table. We all gathered around the wood stove and chit chat with people then we all have a gatering around the camp fire outside. It was very unique, you can take a tour of the area with the owner.
In 2012, I was there on first of June and they just snow plowed the road on the higher pass. The road was OK, one muddy mile near the west end. The gravel used on most of the road was borken rocks, some sharp and I had a flat, a rock got through the tire.
The view is really nice, and you can see all sort of wildlife, including the famous Ptarmigan, very funny bird that reply to you if you try to imitate them.
We saw a few Harley Davidson Bike on the road, so it can be done!
As for camping, you can camp anywhere if you like, we saw a few tents on the side of the road and we did boondock camp near Paxson.
