I see cell service is the topic de jour ... so if I may ask, what's the latest on celluar DATA in Canada, presumably Northern BC and Yukon? A lot of the Canada coverage maps I've found pretend those areas of Canada don't exist.
7/11's SpeakOut seems to be a fair price, $100 gets you a few GB of data, as well as voice and sms service. The rest of the pre-pay carriers seem to think a few 100MB is enough data for anyone, and they're charging $$$$ for it. Verizon is $20 per 100MB, or $200 per gigabyte, ouch!
I don't need data in the US, already have unlimited with Verizon, but that won't do me any good for half my journey west and then east across Canada.
I can just speak for the Yukon. Currently, 8 Yukon communities have 3G/4G service: Whitehorse, Dawson City, Watson Lake, Haines Junction, Marsh Lake all with Bell Mobility, as well as Carmacks, Mayo and Teslin with Telus.
Some other communities have CDMA based service, but this is not usable on your iPhone or Android smart phone. The Yukon Government's 2014-15 budget indicates that by 2016 any Yukon community will have 4G service.
Regarding roaming and data usage: It is very expansive as you already know, however, almost any RV Park in Yukon offers free WiFi and you will find free WiFi hotspots in any community. To help you finding them consider using
rvnorth.com
Ones you are up here it shows you free WiFi hotspots near your current location on your smart phone or tablet with details and driving route on an interactive map..
Using rvnorth.om is a Catch-22. Identification of the nearest free wifi requires use of expensive cell data networks unless you identify the next wifi location at your last campground.
