In Minot right now and it's a madhouse, CG's are all full, and the Walmart only allows freight truckers to stay overnight, no campers - the oil field workers ruined that. I can't blame em, Minot reeks of testosterone.
You will find the same thing between Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson once you are on the Alaska Highway. Every motel and fast food joint full of oil/gas field workers, every space in full-hookup RV parks crammed with "permanent" trailers, man-camps built along the highway to handle the overflow, and the highway itself jammed with 4WD pickups, tanker trucks, and lowboys transporting heavy equipment.
Last August we had to park our truck and trailer on a side street and cross the highway to reach a fast-food place in Fort Nelson for lunch. All the full-hookup sites at Sikanni Chief RV Park were taken by oilfield workers and the manager really didn't seem to want to deal with RVers staying for just one night. Despite lots of side roads off the highway in that area, they were churned into deep-rutted tracks by all the truck traffic. So, boondocking was impossible with our lightweight trailer.
My advice would be to plan to just get past Fort Nelson as quickly as possible, then you can actually start to enjoy the Alaska Highway.
