I'm at my wits end waiting for a change in Alaska's weather. Been here about two weeks, and it has been rainy / cloudy all but three. I had allocated 3 weeks for Alaska, but I'm going to spend that 3rd week in Canada where the weather reports are less gloomy.
Just my humble opinion, but Alaska hasn't made much of a first impression on me; it's not on my list of places to revisit any time soon.
I don't think it's a good fit for the type of travel I enjoy, and that's my fault. I don't hunt, fish or 4-wheel, and hiking in the rain is no fun either, as I quickly overheat in rain gear, so I don't wear it and then I get soaked.
I'm a photographer, and if it wasn't clouds and fog, it was smoke ruining the views.
On a side note, the Churches describe Fairbanks as a city that appreciates RV travelers... I'm not sure how they formed that opinion, I found it to be the opposite.
Nearly every business I tried to visit in Fairbanks had a tiny parking lot and there was often no access between lots behind the buildings (there once was, but I found most were barricaded.) In Michigan, this happens because land owners don't want to share the cost of snow removal, so they feud with their neighbors by making it difficult for the plow truck to work. I don't know if that's the same thing in Fairbanks. On a positive note, the Fairbanks Walmart has electric hookups in their parking lot, 30 amp for RV, not the 15 amp for core heaters. Must have been at least 60 electric sites... I found this out only after spending $30 for a city government camp site, which offered the same.
