RE: Rough Roads
I have to say that I continue to be amazed at the speeds folks drive to/from/within Alaska. Right, wrong, or otherwise, Alaska roads ain't like other places: Frost heaves, broken pavement, sinkholes, all prohibit high-speed driving other than by exception.
...and to tear through the Burwash/Destruction Bay segment? Simply doesn't make sense. While I can't cite to Joe b.'s years of driving, I still remember that stretch as the worst part of the drive from 1974(? 2? 6?) when I made my first trip (it was a trip up) the Alcan.
Even the truck drivers that drove the Alcan all the time (on the same fixed schedule: 120 hours Billings - Anchorage; 130 hours Anchorage - Billings, don't ask why it varied) would slow down over that stretch.
