The Taylor Hwy (Alaska) - Top of the World Hwy (Yukon) seems to generate some amazing stories of woe each year. Usually exaggerated during the story telling, and then expanded with the next story telling.
We enjoy this drive immensely, preferring the Top of the World portion (Yukon) as it crosses higher elevations. The Taylor Highway (Alaska) crosses more lowland and suffers more from water damage.
Drove through during major re-construction on the Alaska side in the 1993 and also in 2010 the week it re-opened after a month of being closed due to washouts. So we've seen it good & bad.
We've towed our 25' fifth wheel through numerous times and also our truck/camper. We usually take 2-3 days to make the drive, because we enjoy camping & sightseeing along the way.
We've never felt the road was dangerous, although try to avoid taking the route when it is raining. It must be driven at a speed suited for the conditions, regardless. In 1993 we were in a small 4x4 and it took us about
5 hours to drive the 65 miles from Chicken to the Alaska Hwy. Mud in the north can be slick, making even a 4x4 ineffective.
There is much gravel, dirt, steep ditches and soft shoulders -- conditions that some aren't comfy driving their RVs over.
