Do you think it would be better to put the TOW on the end of our trip (late July early Aug) rather than now? Seems we could do it either way with out substantially altering plans.
It's a tough call. It was mid-July 2010 when the Taylor Hwy washed out after days of heavy rain. Crews were working immediately to repair but it didn't re-open until early September, although opened on some days in between but they did not recommend RV travel on those days.
Usually the highway is in good shape in August thru to mid-September (when the border crossing closes). But the weather is not so predictable here anymore, August 2011 was real wet.
When we were tourists here, I'd check the weather reports while in Whitehorse northbound. If it looked good/dry for Taylor/Top of the World we'd head to Dawson City from Whitehorse. If the forecast was for wet weather, we'd go up the Alaska Highway and then check the forecast for the Taylor/Top of the World on our way back home. It is six of one, half dozen of the other.
Same for our trips through Alaska. I like the Valdez area, but not when it's raining because it can be torrential RAIN there. So at Tok we'd check the weather; if it was dry towards Valdez we'd head that way first. If it was wet, then we'd head to Fairbanks first.
Being able to adapt to suit Mother Nature's whims is a good thing.
