Wanted to post a more recent report on condition of roads. I spoke to a State Trooper as we approached the border southbound about five days ago. I enquired as to the better road conditions on either the AlCan or Top of the World. He said top of the world was going to be horrible because of the rain.
I posted a few weeks ago about how bad the AlCan was between destruction bay and Beaver Creek. We traversed this route on the way back as the trooper said it would be better than the Top of the World. Much to my surprise the conditions on the AlCan were much better this time around. Not a bad ride at all. They must have done some serious repairs in that time frame. Maybe the fact that it was raining on our way up made it worse at that time.
We took BC 37, Cassairs Highway down to Whistler, which is where we are now. Very nice road, but like many other is AK/Yukon/BC, don't try to plan where you will be from one day to the next based on mileage. The road is in good shape but it is somewhat twisty in sections and there are times you will be doing 20-30 KPH if you drive cautiously as I do around curves, over bumps, gravel, etc. The top half of the road has very little shoulders and 15-20 ft drop-offs. Bottom half is really, really nice. Had a couple of really nice pullouts on that road to stay in but be aware of the sharp stones. I had a flat on the fifth wheel due to a sharp stone and I believe I picked it up in a pullout. The Milepost says it is illegal to sleep in the pullouts on this road but I saw others doing it. I did it. We were not bothered at all. There were no signs prohibiting it in the pullouts we checked out. There is a place about halfway down near Deese Lake that allows RV's to stay a night for free. Be cautious of your fuel state on this road. Many of the services on this road have gone out of business it seems (or were shuttered for some other reason) and there was a stretch of about 150-180 miles as I recall with no stations. There are a couple stations near the top and I recommend hitting this road with a full tank.
On to the subject of brew.... I have been partaking in the Alaska Brewing Company stuff available at Fred Meyers and other stores. I just like to have beer or two with dinner at night really. I like the Kohlst style beer they put out. Really good. In Montana on the way up I found stuff from Big Sky Brewing out of Missoula really filled the bill quite well.
Be well and safe travels. Hope this helps.
