North of Ft. Nelson, there are several good parks many miles before Liard Hot Springs. The private Tetsa River Services campground (75 miles north of Ft. Nelson) and the scenic, well-maintained, well-run private RV park at Toad River (good WiFi too) are worth making a reservation to stay in, if necessary. If you're southbound on the Alaska Highway and leave Liard Hotsprings, it is about 200 miles to Fort Nelson. In Fort Nelson most of the campgrounds are full with oil/gas field workers. Continuing southbound between Fort Nelson and Fort St. John, there's usually nothing available either. We did a lot of looking while headed southbound in September 2007 and finally settled on staying in a rest area overnight because there was nothing else to be had.
Another good reason to go north on the Alaska Highway and return south using the Cassiar Highway.
