Right now I am finishing out a year in Korea and should fly back to Vegas in December to pack most of my household goods and get things ready for the trip.
My wife won't be able to join me until the summer, so I will be driving solo. That means I will be making this trip in winter and summer. Also, boats make me seasick, so I much prefer driving rather than taking the ferry. ;)
I've done the drive various times of the year and found that it was better in the winter. No road construction, pot holes are filled in with snow, lodges/roadhouses all have plenty of room and the food is better. Local folks like to visit with you more too. I hauled a boat up in the winter and will never forget one of the gas statattendantsents asking where I was going to launch her. Bring a HD plastic scoop shovel with you to scrape the snow/road grime build up you will get on the front and rear of your trailer. I'm retired USAF and spent 7 years at Elmendorf (JBER now), retired down at Holloman AFB and drove back up in the winter.
