When we did our Alaska trip in 2013 I also carried 15 gallons of diesel just in case. Never used it, but I would do it again for our 2015 trip, you just never know if the remote places run out at the wrong time. In 2013 we needed to fuel around the Pink Mountain area, here is where we paid when you changed from liters to gallons over $9.00 per gallon. We met many folks from the lower 48 at the various campgrounds that were very upset with prices in general for everything from food to fuel who swore they would not spend a dime in Canada that didn't have to. Considering that many of the business in NW Alberta to Northern British Columbia and definitely the Yukon depend on the tourist trade they sure try to wring out every cent they can from you. But you know all that said the trip to our 49th state is worth every cent, I didn't let this ruin our trip in 2013 and will not be surprised in 2015. We also carried 4 spare tires, 2 for the truck and 2 for the trailer and I thank the Lord we never used any of them. On a paved road around Laird Hot Springs we took a rock in the windshield, just a nick, I consider it my free souvenir from the trip.
The wife and I were talking on what we would do different in 2015 and basically we would slow the trip down a little, maybe stay at our favorite campgrounds a little longer. The major highlights for 2015 include only returning to one place that I just fell in love with and that is Homer. So two weeks in Homer, 2 weeks in Fairbanks, 2 weeks in Haines. In each of these stays there are many opportunities for tours and side trips and some fishing.
In 2013 we left NW Wisconsin on May 15 and returned August 15, in 2015 we will leave May 1 from Wisconsin and head to St Mary, MT where we turn north into Alberta, and be back around September 1. What we did learn last year after all the planning was not to book ourselves so tight on the trip plan, always have some built in wiggle time. This became pretty important when my wife had a dental emergency on a Friday afternoon in Glasgow, Montana.
Hopefully we will be able to come back down the Cassiar Highway and do a side trip to Stewart/Hyder area.
It was exciting just to write about this this morning! Happy Camping to all!
