There are some (more and more are passing by the day) that would say, with a fair amount of justification, that the "original Alcan" has long since disappeared...since the 50's anyway. One of the friends of the family worked on the construction of the Alcan and would recount tales of how it was a series of gravel stretches interrupted by corduroy road stretches interrupted by Cats stationed next to the mudholes.
...and as Sue T would correctly point out, the road has been the Alaska Highway since about that time period.
