The US is way behind the use of chipped cards which are more secure. 2 of my 4 credit cards have recently been replaced with chipped cards which contain an imbedded chip.
We got a USAA card with a microchip before we went to Alaska in 2013. It was worth it for the time it saved paying for gas at the pump in Canada.
The only U.S. chain we have found that will consistently use the chip is Walmart. Target and Home Depot--the two chains who created a real need for a chip--and Kroger grocery stores have the chip readers (the blue-lit slot at the bottom of the card reader), but still don't have the software to use it. Now that we have skimmers that can read the mag strip being placed on ATM machines and stealing card info, the need to convert to the chips is even more critical. So, why haven't the big chains installed the software? $$$$$ !
