We've travelled both the Alaska Highway and the Cassiar in winter. The distance difference is negligible, a couple hundred kilometres. But the Alaska Hwy route is quicker because the AK Hwy is better maintained through the winter, to ensure the transport trucks can make it trouble-free.

There are also more services along the AK Hwy during the off-season, again, because there is more traffic. There is also occasional cell service along the AK Hwy (in the communities) whereas there is NO cell service along the Cassiar Hwy.
