Pets: Obtain a Health Certificate from the Vet you use designed to permit the pet to make foreign travel. Not just a proof of shots that are current.

For most US travelers visiting or in transit thru Canada with domestic pets (such as typical dogs over 8 months old and cats over 3 months old), a valid 3 year vaccination certificate is sufficient (current shots) as a health certificate is not required for this criteria...Exotic pets and livestock have different requirements.

Importing or Travelling with Pets

Vehicle Insurance: Obtain a proof of insurnace ID card from your agent specific to Canadian Provinces. The little card you carry around the US is not sufficient should you be involved in a traffic accident in Canada. This also insures that your specific insurance company covers you while in Canada.....

Most US based insurance companies are now phasing out these cards as it seems Canada will no longer enforce this requirement for US insurance companies....

I believe State Farm had phased out issuing the Canadian Non Resident insurance cards since 2012, and other insurance companies had followed suit according to other members posting so in a past thread a couple years ago....

Geico was still issuing the Canadian Non Resident insurance cards thru 2014 as they phased out issuing them in 2015 in which they officially told me the non resident cards are no longer required...I still obtained one every year as I been taking my vacations in Canada on a yearly basis the past 8 consecutive years and had obtained a card since 1991 on other travels or vacations in Canada.

While my insurance company was still issuing the cards, other insurance companies had opted out from issuing them.

In Sept. 2013, I had my first Canada road block mandatory checkpoint experience with the RCMP Watson Lake Detachment as the officer instructed me to show : Driver License - Vehicle Registration - and Proof of Insurance -

I handed her my license and proof of insurance along with the Canadian Non Resident Insurance Card as she questioned the Canadian Non Resident Insurance Card as she stated she never seen one before nor what the purpose of it was, so that told me they were not familiar nor had formal training of this past requirement....Needless to say I was still looking for the vehicle registration and finally found it after a 4 minute search of it as she would NOT let me clear to proceed without submitting the last required document (vehicle registration).

With all that said, my advice for those (that still obtain the non resident cards) is to contact your insurance company and ask them if they still issue those cards, and if they say they do not issue them...do inform them that you will be travelling in Canada at your specific time and have them reassure you that they WILL cover you while in Canada, since Canada's required liability coverage amounts significantly differ to anyone's current US policy.
