These are all good suggestions, but they still didn't really make my trip any better. Maybe others have better luck, and I would say to definitely follow your tips.
On my trip, I had a 10 by 10 Paha Que, easy to put up and very sturdy. I also had a nice cot with a memory foam mattress and a Little Buddy heater and a smaller cot that one of my dogs liked (she's old). I camped out of an SUV and could comfortably sleep in the back when I didn't want to set up the tent. I also did stay in motels occasionally.
I've been tent camping since I was a kid growing up in W. Colorado, also the Utah deserts. I prefer the simplicity of it all, but in AK, it didn't seem to matter where I camped, the moskies were terrible. I was in BC the year before in late July and had no moskie problems, even though I was told it had been a bad year for them, so I think the secret to tenting it is to go later in the year.
