We have been to AK 3 times. The only time reservations were made was for over a holiday weekend, an event or a very popular destination. Weekend high demand CGs during fishing season would need reservations too but weekdays most places most times there should not be a problem.
In season don't expect to arrive at a no reservation CG after 5:00PM & get a prime site, especially if you are a large rig.
