Verizon and AT&T are the two big carriers up here. My wife used Verizon with the Canada add in for a month last summer when she was driving the Alaska highway, it worked great. I use AT&T and have good coverage throughout the road system here.

I went in June & July last year with an AT&T iPhone & a Verizon Jetpack for data. Much better service in Alaska with AT&T, however in the major cities Verizon was OK. Some of the Verizon stores had "Verizon in coming to Alaska" signs - I suspect they are improving coverage.

As to Canada, we had little problems with AT&T for voice, data was expensive...

Is there long stretch where you have no data? Canada and AK?

I used AT&T this winter in Florida with my Iphone. From what I hear, I guess this is what I will use next time I go to AK. I just checked AT&T Web site and it is $60 prepaid for one month for 5 GB high speed and unlimited slower speed after that and the data can be used in Canada too. The phone in Canadas can be used but there is a .39 cent per minute per call.
