I used AT&T this winter in Florida with my Iphone. From what I hear, I guess this is what I will use next time I go to AK. I just checked AT&T Web site and it is $60 prepaid for one month for 5 GB high speed and unlimited slower speed after that and the data can be used in Canada too. The phone in Canadas can be used but there is a .39 cent per minute per call.
There are parts of both Alaska & Canada where there is no service. In many cases as you near towns & cities, service becomes available & disappears as you leave.
The phone services change their plans & coverage so quickly that what was true in June may no be so now, but the AT&T Canada plan only covered voice & text. One "interesting discovery" was the AT&T Canada plan had unlimited texting included, but because I didn't have texting on my US plan, they charged me for each text message at the US rate...
