If it is a crack, stop by an auto windshield repair location explain your trip situation they will likely help. I have had them use a glass cutter to redirect the crack to the edge.
If a chip go to Walmart buy a windshield repair kit. About $12
It actually works, follow the directions and don't rush the job.
Make sure you are lined up over the chip, wait up to 15 minutes to fill the cracks.
Living in Alaska if I replaced the windshield every time it chipped it would be in the shop 5 times or more a year. Wait till you get home to replace the windshield if the repair does not hold up.
