- dhill462ExplorerRetiring in May 2017 and leaving for Alaska from Texas. We have not done a lot of planning yet. Getting pretty excited about the trip.
- ford-willyExplorerI just read this "2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation and we invite you to celebrate with Parks Canada! Take advantage of free admission to national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas for the entire year." -- So does this mean we do not need to buy a parks pass to visit Banff & Jasper or any other Canadian National Park on our 3 month 17 trip. I hope so.
- sue_tExplorerI don't use bug spray or nets. If I get into an area with lots of bugs, I just keep moving so they don't have time to settle on me. They tend to prefer shady damp areas, whereas I like open sunny areas so we tend to not have many conflicts :D
- PA12DRVRExplorer"Normally you will not need a net, but expect mosquitos in wooden areas. If you go on the Dalton highway up to the Artic Circle and you plan to walk around I would bring it, last time is July there was plenty. You sure need bug spray."
X2. The further one goes off the beaten path and off the driving roads, the more likely to encounter mosquitoes, gnats, blackflies, etc. Any hiking near bogs or most lakes will likely see some bugs and if one does go into the wooded areas, particularly in the afternoon stretching to evening, you'll likely encounter bugs.
I always carry a headnet as I don't like the sprays, but headnets have drawbacks as well. - KidooExplorer

Not sure if this belongs in the Roll Call thread, but here I go.
Planning the AK trip for 2017. Haven't begun obsessively planning (yet) but as thoughts occur, I'll ask. We will travel in a motorhome.
Do you bring mosquito net clothing? This would be hats with netting or something like this. www.bugbaffler.com
Directv signal seems to get lost about Calgary, AB as I understand it. We have a Winegard Traveler on MH and a Slimline 3 portable dish. Would either one readily acquire a signal in Alaska? I'm thinking of times when we might be in one place for a couple of days.

As far as TV signal, the best show is through your windows / windshield! - TravelingLady66Explorerhi... I am new to this Forum. Have done lots and lots of traveling, but never in an RV..just got a used RoadTrek and am updating it in preparation for the Yukon & NWT. I plan to leave in May...and looking forward to reading all the posts before -- helpful hints, campgrounds along the way that accept dogs, etc. :)
Lisa & Alice(woof) & Amy(woof) - SBradleyExplorerCheck out, Sue Thomas pictorial guide great information.
- nevadanickExplorerWe were there in august and september and didnt even need mosquito spray. Lost dish signal along the way so had it turned off until we were back in the lower 48. Been to Ak 4 times and never needed mosquito spray let alone a net.

Lots to read, some redundant, but all-in-all sage advice for anyone planing a trip.
