Not sure what rig you are taking north Steve but take your time heading north up the Cassiar Hwy. It gets rougher the further north you get towards the Alaska Hwy intersection. We had a blast summer of 2016 and spent 3 weeks on the road to Alaska and back to WA State. Did Jasper and Banff on the way home along with Glacier National Park. I lived in Alaska for 25 years so have driven the Alaska Hwy and every trip is an adventure that's different. Summer of 2016 we came upon a Bison stamped along the Alaska Hwy. We stopped on the Hwy and waited for the herd to clear the area before continuing south.
Depending on your time line I would suggest you take your time. We averaged between 100 and 225 miles per day and spent several days in multiple locations just to take a break and explore the area.
Also, we found once in Alaska a few times we made a base camp and then did day trips without our 5th wheel trailer to the more remote places we wanted to explore.
We are planning a future trip and will take our truck camper and a Toad and plan to visit Inuvik, N.W.T. and Prudhoe Bay, AK above the Artic Circle.
