Alaska and Yukon are rebuilding long segments of their highways every summer due to frost heave or underlying permafrost and muskeg. Or a flash flood takes out the section west of Watson Lake, delaying RVers for 3 days. If the construction is not at Beaver Creek and Healy, it is at Glennallen and Destruction Bay or Eagle River and Northway Junction or . . . More than once, we have had time for a leisurely picnic lunch while waiting for a pilot car.
So plan on construction delays, earthquake or no earthquake, if you want to drive to Alaska. Even cruise ship passengers can be affected if they take buses to Denali or Dawson City. Only if you fly everywhere, like PA12, will you avoid construction delays! Or maybe ride the train, if all you want to see is Seward, Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali, and Fairbanks.
