INMHO one of the best parts of a trip to Alaska from the lower 48 is being able to find and stay at particularly scenic spots for a few days..or on the other hand move on swiftly through some ugly towns and places in Canada along the way. Dont get me wrong there are many beautiful ones also.
There are ugly areas of Canada?
A caravan imposes if not an actual limit to your choices (because they are made in advance for you)or in one like you describe, a peer group implied pressure to not break up the group. Thus having to stay where they want not necessarily where you want.
Self imposed caravan members should be free and encouraged to venture out
When I see these huge RV caravans going through Alaska they are just like giant tour groups being herded from one place to another and told where to park and camp...
You apparently have little understanding of the value of a the professional caravan to it's members.
Not hearded. Rather the reservations are made, using the radio they are escorted directly into the site with no stopping or waiting in line at the office. They develop relationships, a bus takes them to the tourist areas, no waiting etc as it's all prepaid.
While a professional caravan is also not for me I appreciate the benefits of professions guides that know the area and provide a good experience. It is prepaid with a given schedule but you also get help when needed.
