The topic that you've chosen to reply to is an east coast one. Atlantic Canada means: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
The Maritimes means the 3 provinces which were in Canada in the 19th century.
I'd suggest that you start a new topic on first trip to Alaska or something like that.
Re. a woman traveling alone or groups of people traveling together, all of these things exist.
I've found that having a dog or two of 50 lbs or more makes a wonderful difference. I'm quite comfy boondocking on spot I pick out off a logging road. & I spent 3 months in Australia in 2012 traveling with one dog of about 60 lbs.
Re. aurora, you see those in the dark. Summer in Alaska has very long days.
