ROLL CALL! Atlantic Canada and Maritimes 2014

Since the Alaska roll call threads have been so useful, thought this might be a good idea.

We're going to be leaving Pahrump, NV soon, heading out to explore the Maritime provinces. Looking for ideas on campgrounds, attractions and routes.

Anyone else going that way, we would love to meet along the road! We took the small rig to Alaska last year, but this year we're taking the bus.

If you're plans include coming to Newfoundland, it might help people get the idea.

Shall I toss out how to pronounce Newfoundland the way Newfoundlanders do too? Ok, Newfunland We (home to me 24.5 years)have fun in Newfoundland and it rhymes with understand.

    :B
  • Sounds mighty tempting. We need to be on the road by June 14 and our plans have already changed twice. I'm thinking Newfoundland? lizzie
  • The Provincial Parks are great and reasonably priced.
Be prepared for price sticker shock. Almost everything you buy is expensive by US standards.
The PEI mussels are just wonderful. Be sure to give them a try.
  • Thanks NCWriter! We planned on spending time in Halifax and along the Bay of Fundy, glad to get your recommendation of Newfoundland too.

Little Kopit, not letting people know you're gone is generally a good recommendation, but in our case it doesn't matter. Our neighbors know when we're gone and two of four are retired LEOs. ;) We couldn't hope for a better situation for long term RV travel.

So should I change the thread title to Atlantic Canada?
  • Then again there are those who say don't tell the world you're going to be away. It's safer for your residence, even if you are paying someone to keep an eye on your place.

Spring is slow to arrive in Atlantic Canada (means NL, NB, NS. & PEI), but most falls are especially lovely.

& The Maritimes is just NB, NS, & PEI. 'Twas Joey Smallwood, first premier of Newfoundland & Labrador in 1949, who came up with "Atlantic Canada". Newfoundlanders notice if visitors say that.

Even if this spring is slower than most this year tourists are already here.

    :C
  • We're planning to head up that way again this summer for maybe a month. Will focus mostly on te Gaspe Peninsula though, which isn't technically a Maritime Province.

We loved the area in 2012 and spent a couple of months there and in Maine. Highlights were:

Campobello Island and the Bay of Fundy coastline of New Brunswick
    Halifax, NS
Cape Breton Island NS - worth at least a week, with a couple of days for the Cabot Trail
Most of all, we loved Newfoundland.
  • I have the itinerary for two different caravans. We used a caravan for the trip to AK last year and found out we much prefer the unstructured way of travel. ;)

I do not plan on stocking the pantry before leaving the US, we found we love the little Canadian mom&pop restaurants.

We had planned on leaving a month ago, but hubby was delayed installing solar on our bus. Campgrounds with 50 amp power were rare last year, that's why we took the small rig. This year we won't need to run the generator for adequate power.
