Route 160,166 Kansas

Next summer I am traveling cross country in my GMC 2500HD pulling a 30' TT. I am wondering if I could get some advice on traveling on Rte 160 all the way across Kansas. I mainly want to know if there are regular gas stations and any campgrounds along the way. It doesn't look like there is much there. The other choice I saw was Route 166.Last year I went across on Rte 54.
  • We did US 160 from CO thru KS this past summer while views were nice road is terrible due to surface and sub standard width in many sections. CG's and fuel no problem. For KS check out the state fishing lakes as the camping while dry is usually free.
  • Baxter Springs is the first town on 160 coming into Kansas from Missouri. They have a small park with a few hookups by the river, west side of the river.

We have traveled across 160 from Missouri to Colorado before but prefer traveling 400 although it does take longer than going north to I70. lots of small towns on both routes but never had trouble finding diesel

On 160 a nice state park is Elk City Lake ks state park. lots of first come first serve sites on the water but weekends are packed

on 400 we stay at Cheny Resevoir state park and go to the Kansas Comosphere in Hutchinson KS - awesome space museum and have also stayed in Dodge City and John Martin Reservoir St park which is on 50 before Pueblo Colorado

The state fair grounds in Hutchinson has a nice camp ground
