- john_betExplorer III don't know about now,but 30 years ago, when we lived there, there was a lot of truck traffic on it to and from the sand pits. The roads was heavily grooved where the trucks sunk into the hot asphalt. This made it hard to drive on with a narrower tracked vehicle. Also those big trucks were always in a big hurry. JME.
- Dave_JeanetteExplorerThanks for all the replies. We will be getting off at the 16 bypass and headed for Custer and Beaver lake campground.
- Mike_TavernitiExplorerBeautiful route. You will enjoy with no issues.
- jrpExplorerYes I've used 44, its good 2 lane road through rural areas. As it gets close to Rapid City the traffic builds with red lights every couple blocks. Depending on your Black Hills destination, I'd want to get off 44 around the 16 bypass, and avoid driving through downtown.
- agesilausExplorer IIIYes we spent a week at the KOA there in Interior. 44 is a good country two lane road. No big grades that I recall. The one thing I very much recall was the 4th of July celebration which was the most dangerous public display I've ever seen. Fireworks were crashing down all over the place. Memorable tho.
