I think we were all confused on your route and destination. You would not be going down the Salt River Canyon.

From Holbrook to Apache Junction:

1. Take 377 off I-40 to 260 and follow 260 west to Payson. Then 87 south with a downhill to Apache Junction....a piece of cake and another beautiful drive.

2. From I-40 you could also take 87 at Winslow to Payson and continue down to Apache Junction. You'll have an uphill from Winslow and a downhill from Payson.

3. My last choice would be to take 60 from Show Low to Globe and then 60 through Superior and into Apache Junction. Around Superior would be a downhill but again, many RVers drive it.

All of the above are suitable for RVs. Just remember that from I-40 to Apache Junction there's a big elevation change so you can't avoid downhills. Even if you went over to Flagstaff and took I-17 into Phoenix you'll have multiple downhills and a big uphill out of Camp Verde.

Also, you're coming from Colorado!!! No ups or downs there? :)
