Route 64 New Mexico

In late June I'm planning to pick up Rt 64 at Cimarron NM and follow it to Shiprock. Stop for 2 days in Angle Fire to run the Cimarron Loop, Rt 38 and 522. Then Rt 64 to the Aztec Ruins, and on to Shiprock. Our destination is Mesa Verde for a few days. I'll be traveling in our Jayco 27n Class C. We have no real time frame. Are these roads ok with this RV? On another thread I was advised against Rt 82 in Colorado. I appreciate this advise and changed my plans.Thought I'd run this leg of our trip by the group for similar thoughts. Mountain roads and elevation and unguarded dropoffs are ok. Hairpin, single lane blind spots that might require me to back up to let an opposing vehicle pass would cause me to seek an alternate route.

    My best friend built his dream home in Angel Fire 5 years ago {complete with a FHU Site for our rig} so we get up there several times a year. The new Angel Fire RV Resort is awesome though a tad pricey. Don't miss visiting the Viet Nam Memorial just north of town as it is awesome and definitely worth your time.

    Driving the Enchanted Circle is one of my favorite rides... I usually do it on my motorcycle and then it gets even better. When you pass through Red River do yourself a huge favor and stop at Shotgun Willies on the left at the west end of town right at the foot of the ski lift. They smoke Brisket like you will not believe and their smoked brisket breakfast burrito {smothered in Hatch green Chile sauce} is legend.



    Just east of Willies the Red River Brewery {voted best in the state and after some serious research I must agree} is another great stop.

    A ride to the top of the ski lift in AF is pretty amazing... hmmm two days might not be enough but three should do it. Enjoy!.

    Excellent, thanks. As I mentioned, we are planning on 2 or 3 days at the Angle Fire RV Resort, so we can drive around the "Enchanted Circle" then to the Aztec Ruins for 2 days. 2 years ago we spent 2 weeks exploring the southern part of the State, Carlsbad, Roswell, Silver City. Wonderful area.

    I ran that road a few years ago all the way to Taos with our full size tractor and a 39' 5th wheel,the wife was not thrilled but I really had no issues at all. I took my time and tried my best to not enjoy the beautiful scenery a lot, at the top of the pass I pulled over to let the folks behind me pass, which all 5 of them waved and thanked me as they passed then just continued on my way. Take your time and you will be fine.

    US 64 is a great scenic drive. From Cimarron it is a little slow and twisty up to Eagles Nest following the river, but is a good road. The next twisty, slow part is from Angle Fire down to Taos but again a good scenic road. From Taos to Tres Pedres it is relatively flat and mostly straight. From Tres Pedres to Chama it is a great scenic drive with long curves and some straight driving through valleys and over ridges. From Chama over to Shiprock it gets into dryer high desert mesa lands and follows valleys through the reservations. Still a good road. There are some open range areas on the reservations so watch for cattle, horses, goats, etc. and slow vehicles on blind curves and dips.
