Route 7 thru NY and Route 9 thru Vermont

Can anyone give me some ideas whether it's feasible to take a 37' mh towing a car on these roads? Heard 9 is a beautiful route for scenery, but where would I go to see if we can take the mh on those routes?

Also on rte 9, don't worry about locals sometimes tailgating you... they are just waiting for the truck passing zones and will zoom past you.

On the other hand... sometimes you, in your motorhome / RV / TT / 5th, will get stuck behind a Vermonter poking along in their Subaru (the state car of Vermont). Vermont is quirky!
  • If you have time for lunch in Wilmington we use to eat at Dot,s a tiny place on the left if headed east, hope it's still there.
  • I live in Wilmington, VT (just east of Hogback). Route 7 in new York is twisty but no issues in a motorhome. make sure you take route 279 around Bennington. Much easier than driving through town , and the views from that road are also very nice.

Once you get east of Bennington, you will climb and climb on Route 9. There is a truck lane, so no issues with speed. Enjoy Route 9, and the towns of Woodford and Searsburg. WATCH for moose. On the descent into Wilmington, you will have a major downhill. Feel free to stop in town (free parking by the old high school) and spend lots of money. We can use it. Once through town, continue Route 9 east to Hogback (plenty of parking before summit on right shoulder, but none east of gift shop). Enjoy the views and then head off east. Route 9 is twisty and has a few down hills, but nothing too serious. Enjoy the ride, but watch your speed.

I regularly tow my 38 toy hauler on this route with no issues.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

    Have a safe trip.

  • Rte 9 In Vermont is beautiful. They have slow lanes for the long hills. Stop at Hogback Mountain for the view and a great gift shop. I purchased a 3 season jacket there for nothing and I love it.
  • That seems to be a major route trucks use I would go ahead and use it, some climbs and a couple of truck run off ramps but I have seen worse, we use this route all the time in the car when headed to the slopes and would not hesitate to use it in our rv.
  • One really nice long hill to climb in Vt. Hogback Mt. but very do able.
