Route around Albany NY

We are traveling NE up I 88 headed to Lake George and need to know best route around Albany area to I 87. Thanks,
  • avoid friday afternoon going north and probably sunday afternoon/evening coming back for the most enjoyable drive.
  • As said, I-88 to I-87 north is not much of an issue. Just avoid the late afternoon peak traffic hours.

There is no best way around Albany. 88 to 90 east to 87 north.
X2. I-87 cuts off before you enter downtown Albany. The only congestion is at the toll booth. There is $0.00 Toll for travel between I88 and I87. Just hand them your ticket.

x3. Going north this is not at all a difficult or tricky way to go. The exit for I-87 N is to the left off of the Thruway, but it's well marked in advance and usually isn't a difficulty to get into the proper lanes.

Going south, the exit from I-87 to I-90 can be a bit harrowing as the exit (to the right) is across a lane or two of people that have just merged up with the road.

You can take US 20 across, but it's pointless barring some specific needs. Doing so saves neither time, nor aggravation, nor toll money.
