It's that much of 101 from Crescent City to the Oregon border absolutely sucks. Much of it is steep, narrow, twisty, and the poor road surface just beats you to death. If he has the time, take 199 from I-5 to 101. It's a beautiful drive.
101 from Crescent City to Brookings is only about 25 miles and the road is almost flat.
