Route from I-5 to Oregon Coast

I have a friend coming up from California (Lake Shasta) and he wants to get over to Hwy 101 and come up the coast to Newport He has a 35' Gasser with Jeep toad.

Wha is the best route for him to cut over?

thanks

Ron
  • Take 138 at Sutherlin to 38 to the coast. I like this route better than 126. I think it's not quite as curvy. But both 126 and 42 are fine too. All are scenic.

299 from Mt Shasta would involve driving south to Redding first. That road is a bit curvy and narrow, some do not like to drive it. I am OK with it, but it is not for everyone.
Grants Pass to 199 to Crescent City is easy for any rig and driver.
Hwy 20 is waaayyy south of Mt Shasta. Quite a bit of backtracking.

I think he said he was leaving Lake Shasta(not Mt. Shasta) which puts him at 299. 299 is a good road and so is 199....log trucks and other freight trucks drive those 2 roads everyday.
  • Having just done this trip-I'm currently in Lincoln City-I can say from personal experience that it takes about the same amount of time to go the I-5 to 199 to 101 route as it does 299 from Redding to the same point even though it's some 60 miles further. 299 is not really the problem, it's not really much different from 199. It's that much of 101 from Crescent City to the Oregon border absolutely sucks. Much of it is steep, narrow, twisty, and the poor road surface just beats you to death. If he has the time, take 199 from I-5 to 101. It's a beautiful drive.

101 from Crescent City to Brookings is only about 25 miles and the road is almost flat.
  • With the info we dragged out of you it seems he wants to get to the Oregon coast and drive a short distance to Newport. If he is in a hurry and isn't interested in the views or quaint settlements, the answer is 126........

If he wants a great drive and will be returning to Redding, I-5 north to the highway that follows the Columbia River from Victoria, WA to the Astoria Bridge South to Newport. That way he can see the entire coast by leaving Newport and continuing south to 299 and then over to I-5 and north a few miles to Redding.

I have been going up to Florence since 1949 and the DW and our DDs have been doing it since the mid sixties and we had a cottage in Yachats for a long time, we've driven everything from a VW bug to our current rig with a tow. Non of the roads are a big deal, it's only big deal on how fast you drive.

My bad. I meant to say from the 299/101 junction to Crescent City
