Route from Reno to Redwood

Looking for some advice on a route from Reno, NV to the Redwood National Park area. We will be towing 30' lite TT with a newer (to be purchased) gas suburban. We are traveling with our in-laws who will be in a 38' Class A diesel pusher. Specifically looking for advice on Rt. 44 from Susanville to Redding and then Rt. 299 from Redding to Arcata.
I've read some threads on here already about Rt. 299...some long climbs and switch backs. If we do it, I'm prepared for taking it slow and letting traffic around on passing lanes and utilizing the turn-offs.
How is Rt. 44 out of Susanville? Has anyone had experience with these routes...anything to watch out for? We will be traveling late July/early August.

Thanks.

  • Hwy 44 from just west of Susanville to Redding is a nice 2-lane road. Fine for any rig combination. Hwy 299, IMHO, is also fine but some people on here swear it's the pits. There are curves and passes, but logging trucks used to use it all the time - back when we had logging. As long as you're not in a hurry, and not bothered by a few cars that will back up until the passing lanes, it should be a nice drive.
  • Are you committed to the Susanville route?

CA20 to US101 is an alternative that avoids the hills and curves of 299, and lets you see the Redwoods state park units south of Eureka. The distance is not that much longer then the 299 route.
