There is no reasons in the world why you would not bring your rig to Vancouver Island, even with the ferry fares. I would strongly suggest that you take the Coho ferry into Victoria from Port Angeles. Just outside Sequim there is Dungeness campground, with a spectacular beach walk for the family to enjoy. Dry camping without power. If power is required, there is John Wayne Marina just south of Sequim.
Stock up with chicken, cheese, dairy, and fuel before leaving the USA and alcohol as far as your duty free will let you.
Once on Vancouver Island it would seem you have a need to go visit in Salt Spring perhaps, but missing the trip up the Island Highway to Campbell River would be a real disappointment. It's short day driving trips, and great RV Parks or use the BC Parks for sheer beauty. About 45 minutes west of Campbell River is Buttle Lake, our personal park favorite place for hiking and sheer beauty. The ferry off Vancouver Island takes you to Horseshoe Bay where you can head towards Whistler and Pemberton then take some great routes across BC from there.
PM me for some more if you decide to come to Vancouver Island.
