A lot of good advice from locals above. There is almost too much info to comprehend for that long a trip.
We have found Pocket Earth by Google to be very helpful in trip planning and during the trip. It's on our i-pad. For a grand total of $2.99 for endless map downloads of the world/countries/states/provinces. it is a total deal. It pushed NatGeo's wonderful map series right off the map, so to speak.
We too are planning a 4-month trip around the US boundary states, clockwise and will hook up 4G before we leave so the i-pad GPS will work too.
Beyond that, I would suggest a two week trial run before you leave, near your home in case something goes south, taking everything you will take and trying out all the features and mechanical parts of your rig to see if it all works, and what you need to adjust/ditch/re-organize. Anything you don't use during the trial run should be shed. My guess is that the 5.3/1500 is a bit lightweight for extended TT travel, especially if there are any steep hills involved.
Be prepared. Be flexible. Go right into the teeth of it. It will be the trip of a lifetime.
