I certainly would stay on the northern route when traveling from Maine to Alaska. We have driven our MH on the Trans-Canada as far west as Winnepeg and will be taking it farther west when we head to Alaska from Michigan this summer.
IMHO For you a possible small increase in fuel cost per gallon will be more than made up by the fact the Trans-Canada will be about 300 miles shorter and you avoid Chicago. Geez Avoiding Chicago is worth the cost by itself.
