Route to North Cascades Natl Park

I'll be driving North on I-5 through Seattle heading to North Cascades NP. Hwy 20 looks like the way to go for an RV towing but am wondering about hwy 530 from Arlington to Rockport and whether that is a good road for 50-feet of motor home and toad. Thanks

  • Thanks for responses and the suggestions. Can hardly wait to visit our 34th National Park at North Cascades.
  • We tow that pass several times a year to our favorite campground, Riverbend, in Twisp, a few miles south of Winthrop. Beautiful drive. We think the small town of Twisp has a better market (Hanks) and cheaper fuel than Winthrop. Have a safe trip!
  • While it goes through two small towns, Arlington and Darrington, traffic is lighter than US20, especially at its western end.

A mile or so of this highway had to be rebuilt after the Oso landslide (about 2/3 of the way to Darrington). There's a slight river divide on this stretch, but nothing you'll notice. The leg north of Darrington follows the N Sauk river that joins the Skagit at Rockport. This stretch has some pretty big leaf maples that nearly cover the roadway.

If you are into hiking, the area east of Darrington is as good, if not better than the North Cascades. But that's a toad drive.
  • Yes we use it a lot. take your time its a 45-55MPH road. It is as good as 20, and connects at Rock Port. very nice camp ground there Steelhead park.
