Route to Seattle

We are currently in Mission, Texas on the very southern Tip of the State. What is the best Route to take to avoid most of the Mountains and still stop at Reno, Nevada? I was thinking about going through southern California headed North. The only Mountains up that Way are around Mount Shasta. Does anyone have a better Idea?

  • I 80 from Reno to Sacamento over Donnner Summer is about a 4000 elevation climb, two lane few passing lanes. Lots of big rig traffic. I5 at Shasta is a looonnggg climb but several passing lanes then a long downhill. Lots of big rig traffic.

You can take US395 to Susanville / Alturas. From there you have several choices. Alturas is fairly flat and desolate. If I recall, continue north gets you to Medford, OR. Take Susanville thru a series of smaller California highways to Weed just south of Mt. Shasta. Or stay on US 395 till you get to Yakima, WA. Take I90 west into SEA.

    Enjoy Emerald City.
  • Don't forget the Sierra between Sacramento and Reno if you decide on I5 from So Cal.
  • OR31 skirts some dry/salt lakes and rims. There's a commerical hot springs. And a little ways off in Christmas Valley there are a couple of volcanic features (e.g. Fort Rock). It's designated as Oregon's Outback scenic byway.
  • I must second Mission to Phoenix, to Las Vegas to Reno, up 395 but then I would cut over to 97 on the 31 in Oregon or via Adin to Klamath Falls in Calif but there is a bit of mountain going that way..
I took 31 few years ago and I don't remember any mountains, but little to see or do. (I also took 395 thru Oregon and did hit the mountains near John Day but what a beautiful place to spend some time.) I'd stay on Hwy 97 to I84 west and then take I205 across the Columbia avoiding Portland.
You could also go on the I10 to the I5 but in Northern Calif and southern Oregon you'll hit the Siskiyous and while they are not bad, they are mountainous and curve.
  • I just want the best route to go from Mission, TX to Reno, then to Seattle to avoid most of the Mountains. I want to take it fairly easy on my Truck. I just had the Engine rebuilt last Month.

From Reno, head north on US395. Once you hit Pendelton,OR head west of I84 to I82 north/west connecting with I90. This dumps you right mid point in metro Seattle area. There you have choice of north or south on I5. Not glamerous, but get you there.

Even less glamorous is to drive I84 West to I5 in Portland, OR and take I5 all the way to Seattle. No WA passes to drive through.

How do I go from Reno to I-84 and bypass most Mountains?
