Routes in Montana

We are going to be traveling in Montana this summer. We are thinking of traveling from Missoula to Kalispell on route 93 north. From Kalispell we are going to be traveling to Helena on routes 82, 83, 200 and 141.

We will be traveling in a 36 ft motorhome pulling a car. Will we be okay on these roads? Any help will be appreciated.
  • I think you habe picked the best routes. As mentioned by prior poster, I would not take MT 35 around the east side of Flathead Lake.It is narrow and would be more of a challenge. The routes you list are the routes I always take. It's very scenic with many mtn lakes and forest campgrounds along MT 83. US 12 just before Helena goes over McDonald Pass. It's fairly steep but 4 lane, so you'll be fine. enjoy the trip.
  • n7bsn, yes I remember those bumper stickers. I also remember a couple of years ago when a young gal driving on 93 and couldn't avoid some idiot playing Bigfoot standing in the road. As far as Rt35 on the other side of the lake, it is a narrow 2 lane road especially thru the cherry orchard territory and on into the Big Fork area. But again, a beautiful ride. Those cherries should be off limits. If we are in the area at cherry harvest time, I get a heck of a good cleaning out! Called over indulgence.
  • You will have no trouble- just don't get in a hurry. And, of course, you shouldn't be in a hurry anyway. Just relax and enjoy.

On Rt.93 do watch the posted speed limits when going thru the small burgs and on the reservation. Nice drive!

Until they fixed some of the sections Highway 93 had one of the highest fatality rates in the country. A common bumper-sticker was "Pray for Me, I drive Highway 93"

  • We took SR 35 around the east side of Flathead Lake after receiving several suggestions when I asked about the route. It was a good drive and we scored some absolutely delicious cherries on the way!

    We in a 30' & tow a jeep.
  • hope you don't get behind too many farm trucks. you will never make any time. enjoy the scenery.
  • MT-141 is the only "bad" one in the routing... and it's not that bad. Be careful and you will be fine
