Routes to Big Bear

Hello everyone!

I'm planning on towing my 20' travel trailer up to Green Valley Lake, west of Big Bear this coming Labor Day. My TV is a AWD 2014 Pathfinder.

I've been up to Big Bear a number of times and was planning on taking hwy 38 so it's a bit flatter. Then I found mention of taking hwy 138 to Crestline and then taking 18. That would cut about 40min off my travel time.

Would taking 138 be a viable option? I don't have the strongest TV so how does 138 compare to 38?

Thanks!

  • Thanks for the input. A short, sweet answer. I’ll take the long way around.

As far as the CVT, I don’t notice much of a difference between it and my last TV. Granted I’ve only towed with it 6 or 7 times and it’s been pretty flat each time. I don’t have a transmission temp monitor but wish I did. Nissan swears the CVT doesn’t need a transmission cooler but you never know...
  • Doesn't look like many folks are in a position to know. Old-Biscuit has been around some, so probably there's your answer.

I'm curious to know how your CVT has been performing. I like the new variety Pathfinders and there are some good prices on used ones, but I tow all the time (for work and play) and am a bit leery of the transmission. What's your experience been? Do you have a transmission temp monitor?
