RV camping in Fernie BC

We dry camp all the time Fulltime, and we don't really care for crowded campgrounds and we like free even better. Thanks for the suggestions. Our kids are going up early so I'll have them take a look around for us. Also I called Alpine Lodge and they allow complimentary RV parking/camping in their parking lots during the slow season. Soup we have lots of campgrounds here in Southern Oregon that close for the season and some close the gates and some don't. Just no services.

Strange that the campground gate was even open if there was no host. The campgrounds around where I live don't open the gates until the campground has a host.
I'm talking Provincal campgrounds.

Is it totally off limits Fitchmo or can you just go in and dry camp just zero hosts? We do this at Little Bow PP when it's not officially open over the past 17 years. I ask because our kids (24&31) just camped this past Thurs to Sun on Lake Koocanusa in the sites at Gold Bay (dry camping with picnic table and were allowed a fire). The lady at the 1800 number I called said "Oh if they are coming this weekend it'll be free not the $14 because there's no one there yet and they haven't raked the sites". They totally enjoyed it and late Friday just one other fifth wheel came in onto these 8 sites. Water level was down substantially but that aside they had a wonderful weekend. Also there is a dump on the NE of town Fernie ?chamber of commerce that cost them $2 in the honesty box, couple days ago FWIW.

We've also seen folks stay at Canadian Tire area in Fernie, and other areas for an overnight or two as a heads up if maybe needed in a pinch.

Couple of thing to know for May long weekend in BC this year, Victoria Day long weekend is May 16, 17 &18 weekend:
BC Provincial parks will require a 3 night reservation for the long weekend. You can not book a reservation in a BC Provincial park for only 1 or 2 nights on a Stat weekend, This rule is for all BC Stat weekends only
Most if not all campgrounds will have opened by that weekend, unless it is still covered in snow.
Looks like Mount Fernie doesn't open until June 1 , that's what I get from the reservation calendar, most likely because of left over snow on the ground. There is contact info on the site you may want to check into.
Just about everyone in Canada on this first long weekend ( Victoria Day weekend) of the 2015 camping season will be out for the first time of the year, and I mean just about everyone. Campgrounds will be packed rain, shine or snow, which I have seen a couple of times on that long weekend.
However since your going to be in Fernie on the weekend of the 24th you won't have ant issues finding a place room at a open campground.

Thanks for all the suggestions, Luckyd, we are going to be there May 24th weekend. We have family coming in from all around and are staying at the Stanford Resort, so we wanted to be close. We will probably have someone go over to Mt Fernie Provincial park and get us a spot. I looked at Google maps on the street level of Snow Valley Motel & RV and its right on the road. So we will not stay there, we like a little privacy, space and quiet, and a campfire. :) We will be traveling up towards Banff and Glacier National park later in the week. Looking forward to exploring the beauty of BC.

You do not say "when" you are wanting to stay.
A lot of campgrounds do not open until May 24th weekend.
Suggest you check it

If you "need" hook-ups then there are 3 campgrounds within about 30-45 minutes:

Mountain Shadows, Sparwood, good CG, get a site back from the highway.

Will O Bend, Jaffery, looks good, limited number of sites for overnighters.

Kikomun Creek, Nr Elko, good provincial park which now has a limited number of power only sites.

We have stayed at Mount Fernie Provincial Park a number of times but it has no hookups. Snow Valley Motel & RV Park is right next to the main highway and the sites are very close together. Another option for hookups is Mountain Shadows Campground in Sparwood which is about 30 km east of Fernie.
My first choice would be Mount Fernie but I very seldom want hookups.
