RV Caravan to Panama?

I don't know if I am putting this in the right place but does anyone know if there is a forum for people who want to join an RV caravan. I am planning an extended stay in Panama; driving from California to Panama sometime this summer, and thought it would be nice to find other RV'ers who are thinking about making a similar trip this year.

It seems a lot of Americans, and Canadians, often make this approx. 3,800-mile trip. I'll do it alone if necessary, and yes I have heard all the horror stories about traveling through Mexico, etc. but as I have said I have heard from a lot of people who have successfully made this trip without incident also. I am a Vietnam War veteran who traveled to a lot of countries in my youth so I am no stranger to international travel; except driving from country to country is another matter.

Still, if anyone knows about websites where people can inquire about RV caravans I would appreciate that info. I know that there are professional companies that charge between $1,300 to $1,500 to join their caravan from the U.S. to Panama but I first want to see if I can just join a non-professional ordinary group of RV'ers on such a trip without paying a fee. Any suggestions?

  • Looks like Mexico and Panama are on par with the U.S. in terms of crime rates.

I found this link but I don't know how current it is. Lots on the internet to help you. It's about finding like minds.

Your trip sounds like fun. Wish we had a small motorhome or Class B.
  • Lots of statistics. Some mean nothing - and some mean something. If you have heard horror stories about Mexico I am not sure why you haven't heard any stories about the other countries you may be traveling through. Below are some websites where you can find much more detailed info - and some stats that show some of the more dangerous countries. Keep in mind there are also permits and insurance and other technicalities that must be dealt with - and though I haven't been we hear the roads get worse as you go beyond Mexico.

I marked some countries that may be of concern with ***. Some of these stats are for murder and some for crime in general. I think maybe more research should be in order. In no way am I trying to bad mouth any country or say you shouldn't go. But everyone should be aware of some of what we don't always seem to hear on some evening news programs.

  • At one time we considered going with a Caravan to Panama. In the end, we changed our mind. During our initial research we found that you need to have travel documents for the various countries you will be going through, insurance is necessary for each country and taking a pet causes all sorts of problems.

Just a heads up on things to take care of.
  • You are probably correct but I am going there to retire and live for hopefully a long period of time; nonetheless, I can understand those who want to go there to get to warmer weather during the winter. Guess I'll just have to surf the net to see what I can find out about forming an RV caravan, etc., or just use a professional RV caravan touring company.
  • I would expect most people to be doing it in the winter months whether doing it individually or in a caravan.
