RV Trip Planning Software?

Ok, please bear with me on this one, somewhat long. Compared to most on the forum I am likely a newcomer to RV travel. Most of our trips are less than 350 miles, one way to pine tree campgrounds and fishing in the state. We did take our 26' BP from AZ. to Bryce, Jackson Hole, Yellowstone and back down through Colorado some years back. Since then our BP turned into a 35' 5er, DW has retired and wants to "get outta Dodge". Being more of an OCD planner than a "just do it" kind guy I wondered if there is any good RV trip planning software? I generally like to know where I'm going to sleep and if there is enough room to park without a shoe horn. So any suggestions would be appreciated. Share your unique planning processes if you have one. If you don't, share that too! Thanks!!

  • I use DeLorme Street Atlas that I selected years ago because I also have a hand held DeLorme GPS for Geocaching--uses DeLorme Topos for it. I upgrade Street Altas about every 2 years. Also use Good Sam trip planning feature-very helpful. I use RV Park Reviews for info on parks but you have to develop a skill at translating some comments. Like not good for dogs due to gravel--we don't travel with a dog. So that is not important. Have a great time traveling!
  • Still using S&T 2013 I figure roads haven't changed that much, use with Garmin and an updated paper map. Will check out RVparky.com
  • I still use S&T 2013. MS stopped selling it I assume because people opted to use online maps such as Google maps or use of GPS's. None work anywhere near as well as S&T. Lack of POI updates will eventually force me to find something else but for now it works well.
  • I'm running Streets & Trips 2013 on both Win 7 and Win 8.1 and will keep using it until something is available.
The Garmin BaseCamp just plain sucks - the learning curve is huge and it doesn't have all the campgrounds and parks the S&T's does.
Streets & Trips for planning, Garmin for verification.
  • I am currently running S&T 2008 on a Windows 7 machine with no issues.
  • There is a pretty lengthy thread on the topic of Microsoft streets and trips. You can use the search function to find It.
Microsoft no longer supports it and so far no one has answered the question of transferring it to another possibly newer computer.
  • I've used rvparky.com and really like it. Put in a stop on your itinerary and it will show all Walmarts, truck stops, rest areas and campgrounds in the area with ratings. You just select the one you want and it adds it to your trip.
  • When I started RVing, there was Microsoft Streets and Trips and DeLorme Street Atlas. Streets and Trips hasn't been updated in awhile. I suspect because Microsoft wants to sell you an updated version every year. But I still use it for initial planning. Not many new expressways since they stopped. Others swear by Street Atlas. I tried it but didn't like it. Probably because its hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
I do plan on downloading Good Sam's free trip router. I would think its more tuned into our hobby. We'll see.
  • Good sam has a free online planner which is okay and shows campgrounds
