Sea Snakes

I've seen what appears to be two sea snakes washed up on the beach - in Teacapan a few years ago and again a few days ago in Mazatlan. From what I can tell online these are way out of their customary living areas - usually Asia and Australia.
Are sea snakes common in Mexico?

  • I've seen several yellow-bellied sea snakes on the beach in La Manzanilla, Jalisco. They usually are not common on the shore, but have probably been injured and washed ashore. In 2 cases I had to warn children away from the still alive snakes who were using sticks to play with them. They can be very poisonous.
  • I am not sure if what we see while fishing is a sea snake...it is a snake in the water, so it fits the description. There are a few in this area which is just North of Puerto Vallarta. The scuttlebutt is that they are very poisonous. Probably about 2 feet long and not large around..
  • Google Sea Snakes in Mexico. Sorry I can't make a link on my Kindle.
Some are found in Mexico, but I don't think they are common.

However, one sea snake is all that is needed to put Mexico on my DW's 'do not go' list.
