I know that some folks have time restraints on their travels, we did for thirty + years. We no longer have those restraints so this may seem unfair but there is so much to see on 101 from Los Angeles to the Canadian boarder that it should take weeks to drive.
My brother lived in Florence Oregon and we in Eagle Rock CA, we would drive that section on 101 and 1 going to visit him and usually took three days. Now the unfair part, this summer we took our DGD up North while her Mum and brother were busy at Scout camp. One day in the redwoods it took us 10 hours to drive 90 miles. We had taken her mum and auntie that route for years and always said, "we need to come back here and go see this or that". Well we finally did and that day we averaged 9 miles an hour.
Now we wish we had planned differently starting some 50+ years ago. Three days is adequate to make the trip, but four or five is a lot more fun and a week is great. And oh yeah, Buena Park to Crescent City is a good ten or twelve hours on any day. Santa Rosa might be a better stop.
