Unless there is some hard reason to go to Seattle, why not head east out of Portland? I84 to Boardman is a much nicer drive with WAY less traffic. You can pick up 395 north between Boardman and Pendelton. This way the roads are preffy flat clear to ID.
We'll actually be coming from Iowa, mostly on I80 and then will be on I84 to Portland, that's the basics. No reason to go to Portland or Seattle other than because we've not been there before! LOL However, it will be the surrounding area mostly we'll want to see, not the cities. The typical hiking trails, waterfalls, ocean, scenery. Just going to do the tourist thing this trip.
