Location: Baja California Peninsula and Sonora
Event: The U.S. Embassy cautions U.S. citizens that Hurricane Sergio is forecast to generate dangerous surf conditions across much of the of Baja California Peninsula as well as heavy rainfall in northern Baja California Sur and Sonora.
Swells generated by Sergio will begin to affect much of the Baja California Peninsula by Wednesday, October 10. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Sergio is expected to weaken and bring Tropical Storm-strength winds to Baja on Thursday with the center of the storm passing over the peninsula on Friday.
Heavy rainfall associated with Sergio and its remnants is expected to produce storm total accumulations of three to five inches with local amounts to 10 inches in northern Baja California Sur and Sonora in Mexico as well as the Southern Plains and Ozarks of the United States through Sunday. This could lead to life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides within mountainous terrain.
